Only an hour’s drive brings you to a small town on the Vaal River that is rich in art galleries, antique shops, restaurants, river rafting, country inns, spice shops and delis.

6Golden Gate National Park and Clarens

10Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve, south-east of Johannesburg
With 60kms of tar roads within this 13 000 hectare nature reserve, including a two-hour circular drive, it’s worth visiting for its cheetah population and exquisite birdlife.
