Wine routes

Orange River Wine Route

Travellers on the Orange River Wine Route are invariably amazed by the dramatic contrast between the arid desert and the lush vineyards growing on the edge of the Orange River. The wine farms of the area depend on this mighty body of water for every drop of their fruity, easy-drinking wines. more

The Franschhoek Wine Route

With its celebrity chefs and boutique wineries the Franschhoek Wine Route might well be named the Francophile Foodie Fling, for it is just that: a no-holds-barred love affair with all things French and gastronomic, that should be undertaken with abandon and enjoyed with gusto. more

Stellenbosch American Express® Wine Routes

The first wine region in South Africa to establish an organised network of wineries, the Stellenbosch American Express® Wine Routes represent more than 200 wine and grape producers on five sub-routes where fine wines, food, history, culture and scenic beauty can be enjoyed all year. more

Bot River Wine Route

Visitors are welcomed to the Bot River Wine Route as an extension of one big happy wine-loving family. It’s not uncommon to be invited on an impromptu cellar tour, or encouraged to partake in grape treading, barrel rolling, or other communal Bot River activities. more

Klein Karoo Wine Route

On your return from the Klein Karoo Wine Route you’ll wonder how so many bottles of port, muscadel, and a liqueur named The Happy Cow came to be in your possession. Then you’ll remember your jovial hosts, their friendliness, their helpfulness, and their generous hand in the tasting cellar. more

The Constantia Wine Route

The Constantia Wine Route is a short 20 minute trip by car from the centre of Cape Town. A world away from the bustle of the city, wine lovers are soon immersed in the pleasures of visiting protected fynbos vineyards and touring historic manor houses before dining in one of Constantia’s many fine restaurants. more

Wellington Wine Route

The Wellington Wine Route is just 45 minutes' drive from Cape Town. Wellington is an historic Cape winelands destination. First San and Khoi nomads roamed here followed by French Huguenot refugees who settled in the valley in 1688, eventually naming it Val Du Charron or Wagenmakersvallei ('valley of the cartwrights'). more

Wine Routes of South Africa

The wine routes of South Africa trace not only the history and development of our country’s 350-year-old wine-making tradition, but South Africa’s maturation into a full-bodied, flavourful democracy. The Cape winelands, and beyond, offer a multitude of wine routes to explore, along with brandy routes, wine biodiversity routes, and the world’s longest wine route. more

Paarl Wine Route

Paarl Vintners, or the Paarl Wine Route, has been in existence since 1978. A quick 40-minute drive from Cape Town, the region soon reveals its pedigree with a wine-making heritage that dates back to 1688 when the French Huguenots, who were well versed in the art of wine making, were granted farms in the Drakenstein area. more

West Coast Wine Route

Before you visit the West Coast Wine Route, forget the glossy tourist brochure version of South Africa’s winelands with their historic manor houses, ultra-modern cellars and restaurants. Prepare instead to be enchanted by whitewashed fishermen’s cottages, seasonal wildflowers, seafood eaten straight from the sea, and wines with complexity and conscience. more

The Darling Wine Route

The Darling Wine Route comprises a handful of independent wine estates, and is known for producing some of the country’s most stellar Sauvignon Blancs. Add country-dining, wild flowers in season, and a thriving artistic community into the mix and you have a memorable wine experience. more

Elim Wine Route

Elim’s Winegrowers comprise a collective of 6 winemakers (including 1 from Napier) that set out to conquer the inhospitable but unique terroir of Elim, in the coastal Cape Agulhas wine-growing district. Known for its storms and jagged coastline, tending vines on the Agulhas peninsula is not for the faint-hearted. more

The Santam Swartland Wine & Olive Route

Located inland on the Cape West Coast, a small community of winemakers tends the Swartland’s picture-postcard vineyards to produce award-winning wines. That is when they are not giving old-world Rhône-style wines a run for their money, or raising conventional hackles by preaching the gospel of old vines and intervention-free winemaking. more

The Worcester Wine Route

There is something vaguely Hogwart-ish about the Worcester Wine Route. Maybe it’s the witch believed to haunt the peaks on dark nights, the alchemy of burnt wine (brandy) potions, or the Hex Express that magically disappears into the mountainside - but, the illusion ends there. The farming families have been here for generations and only practice magic when growing grapes. more

The Breedekloof Wine Route

The picturesque Breedekloof Wine Route is situated between Worcester and Paarl in the Breede River Valley, and includes Rawsonville, Slanghoek, Goudini and Breërivier. It is walled by the Slanghoek and Du Toitskloof Mountains in the west and south-west, and the foothills of the Hex River Mountains in the north-east. more
