The Kamogelo Tourism Centre is the heart of Hoedspruit, a small Limpopo town that lies in the foothills of the northern Drakensberg Mountains, close to the Kruger National Park’s Orpen gate.
Enjoy a meal at one of the restaurants at Kamogelo Tourism Centre, or treat yourself at the African Summer Spa. Check out the artworks at Chalkham Hill Art Gallery, or head for the second-hand bookshop to pick up a few good reads.
Kamogelo Tourism Centre has a number of African art and craft shops, where you can get wonderful curios as gifts or souvenirs. There’s also the delightful Godding & Godding store, selling silk nightwear, slippers and gowns, as well as a range of body products and skincare treatments.
Hoedspruit itself is a fast growing and friendly town that makes a great base from which to explore the many nearby game lodges and reserves including the Klaserie, Timbavati, Selati, Balule and Thornybush private game reserves. From Hoedspruit you can also arrange a diversity of eco-tourism adventures such as river rafting, birding, mountain biking and hiking. The Kruger National Park’s Orpen gate is a short drive from the town.
The name Hoedspruit is a direct translation from the Afrikaans word meaning ‘hat creek’. The story goes that an early pioneer was so delighted with his decision to settle here that he tossed his hat into a nearby creek! The town has grown considerably since these happy beginnings.
Hoedspruit is also part of the Valley of the Olifants tourism route, which takes you through a combination of wilderness and mountain areas, including the Blyde River Canyon, the Kruger National Park and the northern Drakensberg mountains.

The best place to stay in Hoedspruit itself is Raptor's Lodge, a charming self-catering spot set in a wildlife estate. There are many game reserves and lodges outside of town, mainly in private wilderness areas.
