Hamley the giraffe loves meeting tourists, face to face.
That zebra. Doesn’t he look familiar? Wasn’t he on TV once? And that lion, too. Haven’t we seen him before?
Well, as it happens, yes.
At Glen Afric, near Pretoria and Johannesburg, you can meet the wild animal stars of various television series like Wild at Heart, movies (like Mr Bones) and the odd advertisement.
Your wildlife encounters include a game drive, a guided walk (which ends at the irresistibly named Gin and Tonic Hill), a horse ride, or a walk with elephants.
The latter is a very popular option, and it is an unusual little elephant family you walk with.
Bully and Three are a couple, and Three gave birth to a baby on 31 December 2007.
Shortly after that, Glen Afric was contacted with an urgent request from the Kruger National Park. It had a newborn elephant baby that had lost her mother in floods.
After a tense few moments, Three accepted the newborn, and she has raised both Hanna and Marty as her own.
Out in the 750ha bushveld, you may see Jack the zebra, who often stars in the popular South African TV series Wild at Heart. You’ll almost certainly see Hamley the giraffe, who loves attention and enjoys being photographed and filmed.
Hobycat the male lion is also a movie veteran; he’s a bit like Jack Nicholson, and has had way more than his 15 minutes of fame.
Glen Afric Country Lodge is about a 40-minute drive from Johannesburg and a 20-minute drive from Pretoria, and can sleep 42 people in a variety of accommodation, including Hemingway-style tents.
It also has a popular conference and events venue, accommodating 120, and is sought after for weddings. There’s even an ancient olive tree known as the Wedding Tree.
And what better witness to your vows than an elephant or a lion? Preferably a famous one …

How to get here
From Fourways Mall in Johannesburg’s north, take the William Nicol road north. At the intersection with Witkoppen Road, turn left onto Witkoppen and then further on, turn right onto the road to Lanseria Airport and Broederstroom. Carry on past Lanseria until you get to a large T-junction. Turn left here towards Hartbeespoort Dam. You’ll see the entrance to Glen Afric after a few minutes, on the left-hand side.
Around the area
The Lesedi Cultural Village is so close that the Glen Afric hippo sometimes goes to visit its dam. Glen Afric is also close to the Magaliesberg mountains and Hartbeespoort Dam, both of which have a number of exciting activities and destinations.
What will it cost
The game drive, game viewing on horseback and elephant walk cost between approx. R250 and R350 per person each.
Length of stay
You could stay here for a half-day or a few days. There’s plenty to see and do.
