Tsitsikamma EEZI Bikes allow you to experience part of the eastern end of the Garden Route from a battery-powered mountain bike. If you want to burn up calories, then just turn the motor off and use your own pedal power; if you're too tired, then allow the motor to help you along.
The Tsitsikamma EEZI Bikes 22km ride starts on the road through the old Storms River Pass. Enjoy some great views before a 5km downhill run that takes you through one of South Africa's most beautiful indigenous forests.
Tsitsikamma is an afro-montane forest, a medium moist high forest. Because of the water that carves its way through the mountains and grasslands to the sea, Tsitsikamma means 'place of abundant water' in the San language. The forest is full of rich nutrients that support Outeniqua yellowwood and stinkwood trees as well as 20 different fern species, including the highly prized forest fern.
There are animals here too. You might catch a glimpse of a honey badger, small antelope or even – if you're very lucky – a prowling leopard. Keep your eyes open for forest birds including the red-winged Knysna turaco and the ever-elusive Narina trogon.
You may want to turn on that battery now to climb out of the valley en route to the coastal plateau. Ride through plantations before reaching the viewpoint overlooking the Storms River mouth. This is also the headquarters of the Tsitsikamma National Park. Then it's homeward bound.
