Go Ape - Swinging On a Bridge!

The Gouritz Bridge Swing

As Close to flying as is possible As Close to flying as is possible

If bungee jumping is a bit extreme for you, but you still wish to experience the thrill of swinging through the air at speed, the Gouritz Bridge Swing near Mossel Bay in South Africa is a worth-while adventure experience.

Did you know?

The nearby Bloukrans Bridge is 216 metres high and offers the world's highest commercial bungee jump.

While bungee jumping is offered at the 65-metre high Gouritz Bridge, those who would rather swing in an upright position than dive face-first, have the option to do so.

Yes, there is bungee jumping, but for the somewhat less insane there is also bridge swinging. Just 35km from Mossel Bay, you'll find The Gouritz Bridge - a sensational bridge swing destination.

The Gouritz Bridge swing is a great solution for those wanting to discover what jumping off a perfectly safe bridge is like, but aren't quite crazy enough (yet) to try bungee jumping. The principle is similar however. You are securely attached to a safety harness, although this one goes around your waist and not your ankles. You are then escorted to a jump platform where enthusiastic and experienced assistants will give you a countdown before you leap from the bridge.

The big difference is of course that, instead of plunging headlong towards the river bed in the valley below, you plummet for a while before beginning to swing in a great arc below the bridge, affording you plenty of time to contemplate the nature of your life, the surrounding vegetation and wonder how on earth you ended up in this place.

The Gouritz Bridge is 65 metres high, a lot lower than its big brother down the road, The Bloukrans bridge, but it is the ideal place to try out this bridge jumping stuff. There is also a bungee site at Gouritz so you could try out the swing and then graduate to a bungee jump before hopping in your car and heading to Bloukrans for the highest commercial bungy jump in the world!

You can get a bite there afterwards, you might need it, and the Gouritz River Valley is exquisite and  a worthwhile stop on the N2 through the Garden Route.
