The first diamond discovered in South Africa is known as the Eureka. It was found near Hopetown by 15-year-old Erasmus Jacobs in 1867.
The Diamond Works in Cape Town offers more than beautiful jewellery in airtight display cases.
Here you are invited go on the Sparkling Tour, a journey through the history of diamonds and tanzanite. You’ll meet the designers, cutters and goldsmiths that work here and view some impressive pieces.
As part of the tour you’ll learn about the four 'Cs of diamonds (cut, clarity, colour and carat weight). You'll learn about Barney Barnato and Cecil John Rhodes, the godfathers of the South African diamond trade. You can also view a replica of the Cullinan, the largest diamond ever found.
The showroom at the Diamond Works holds both loose stones and beautifully crafted pieces of jewellery. Sparkling diamonds and deep blue tanzanite stones are set in platinum, yellow gold and white gold.
If what you’ve seen on the Sparkling Tour and in the showroom has moved you, you can consult with an on-site designer. You can choose from the large selection of diamonds and tanzanite and have a bespoke piece of jewellery created for you.

You can also browse the Internet for free at the Diamond Works’ cyber café. Enjoy the complimentary tea and coffee while you check in with loved ones or the office via email or webcam.
The Diamond Works is conveniently located in the central business district of Cape Town so it’s easily accessible from inner city hotels. If distances don’t allow you to walk here, the Diamond Works will gladly take you to and from your accommodation at no charge.

Tours to do
The Sparkling Tour is available on demand from 9am to 7.30pm from Mondays to Sundays and tours are offered in English, French, German, Russian, Chinese and Italian. Bookings aren’t essential but call ahead or book online if you require a foreign language tour.
What will it cost
The Sparkling Tour, sparkling wine, Internet café and transfers are all complimentary. The diamonds, however, are not. Prices on request.
