Summerfield's Rose Retreat & Spa, between Hazyview and Sabie in Mpumalanga, is nestled in a valley among plantations of mangoes, litchis, macadamia nut trees and roses. The 100-hectare property is a wellness haven, known for its excellent service, unpretentious attitudes, and top-class therapies.
At this country spa in Mpumalanga, the tented suites and spa area are all spread out along the banks of the Sabie River. The suites may have a rustic appeal, but they are certainly not lacking in luxury. Bed sheets are high thread count percale cotton, and a bedside iPod provides a modern touch, but the real highlight is the outdoor bathroom.
There's nothing new about outdoor showers, but an entire bathroom is a different story altogether. The plush bath overlooking the river and the shower-head extending from a tree branch are a ‘back-to-nature' treat. Even during winter, a steamy bath while star-gazing is an experience not to be missed.
During the day, the Afro-Asian inspired spa is the place to be. Treatments are conducted in pavilions of wood and glass that fuse beautifully with the landscape. Although they open up on to the river, the design ensures both a sense of privacy and freedom.
Signature treatments are inspired by the local produce, using rose oil and macadamia nut shells and oil, in one of the most tranquil and natural spa surroundings this country has to offer. If you're lucky, you could catch a glimpse of the resident crocodile as well.
In between spa treatments, you can wander through the rose farm, where plenty of different varieties and colours will keep your senses pleasantly occupied. This Mpumalanga country spa is also known for its fantastic menu (all the herbs are picked fresh from the garden) and also has a varied wine list to choose from.

How to get here
Directions from Pretoria – Take the N4 towards Witbank/Middelberg
Directions from Johannesburg – Take the N12 towards Witbank/Middelberg.
Then join, or stay on the N4 towards Middelberg, continue through Machadadorp en-route to Nelspruit. Head North on the R40 through White River and Hazyview. Continue down Main Street, Hazyview. At the Perry's Bridge stop, turn left on the R536 towards Sabie. Summerfields Estate is 4.5 km from here. Follow the Summerfields sign boards and turn right into the Summerfields Restaurant parking area. Full Directions are available on the website.

There is hot air ballooning, adventure activities, hikes and walks. Hazyview and White River are gateway towns to the world-famous Kruger National Park.
