Did you know?
There are more than 30 000 maize farms in the Free State
Fouriesburg in the eastern Free State is where you will find the Mont Plaisir Guest Farm horse trails.
This peaceful farming area offers the ideal weekend getaway for anyone who enjoys the outdoors. Surrounded by vast fields of maize – the area forms part of South Africa's so-called 'maize triangle', where a substantial proportion of the country's maize is grown – it is also perfect for those who enjoy exploring on horseback.
Guests can embark on a two-day horse-riding expedition, which includes a night at a campsite on the farm. Those who haven't ridden before can also take a two-day training course and, provided they are confident enough after this, can then embark on trail rides.
For those whose interest lies in archaeology, the sandstone hills of the region are home to a variety of rock art dating back centuries. Game spotters are also in for a treat: a variety of antelope, zebra and wildebeest can be spotted while riding through the grassy terrain.
The colours of the landscape in Fouriesburg vary considerably between seasons, with bright green summers and golden brown winters. Watching steam rise from rivers and dams on winter mornings is an enchanting experience, one that you would do well to capture on camera.
Mont Plaisir Guest Farm offers various forms of accommodation, including a farmhouse, field cottage, rondawel (round house) and a chalet. There is more accommodation available in Fouriesburg.
Other activities to consider in the Fouriesburg area include fly-fishing, hiking, mountain biking and even asparagus tours.
