The malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve is a premier game park lauded the world over for its people-based approach to sustainable land management through wildlife conservation.
It’s also the site of the largest transfer of game ever to have taken place when 8 200 animals covering 27 species over 7 years, were introduced during Operation Phoenix.
Now plans are afoot to link Madikwe and Pilanesberg reserves into a Heritage Park mega-conservation corridor. Accommodation is aimed at the upper end of the market, and although day visits can be pre-booked – rather come here to relax and let the luxurious, community-managed lodges fulfil your safari fantasies.
It’s a Big 5 destination where you can see elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and rhino all year round, so a dawn or sunset game drive is a must, and look out for endangered wild dog, cheetah and rare antelope.
Visit a rich archaeological site, accompany a local ranger on a bush hike, spend time beside the Marico river, enjoy the prolific birdlife, or sit at a water hole and watch the superb passing show of wild creatures.
