Learn to scuba dive
Did you know?
Necessary skills when learning to scuba dive include the ability to tread water for a period of time and to swim 200m in mask, fins and snorkel.
If you've always wanted to learn to scuba dive, then take the opportunity whilst in South Africa to make your dream come true.
There are many fabulous dive sites all around the South African coast, but if you're in Durban or Plettenberg Bay – 2 of South Africa's top coastal holiday destinations – then take yourself off to the Calypso Dive Centre at Durban's uShaka Marine World, or Prodive at Plettenberg Bay.
At both venues you'll get expert tuition from a PADI-certified scuba instructor, with a variety of beginners, intermediate and expert diving courses to choose from, learning new skills and having unforgettable experiences.
If you're a total novice then start off with the PADI Discover SCUBA 'try dive', run daily at Calypso Dive Centre at uShaka, which will not only introduce you to scuba diving, but also to some very exotic fish.
Fully qualified staff will explain the basic diving principles to you, you'll be kitted out and then it's into the water for a 30-minute aquarium dive . Although you won't get a dive qualification, your experience will enable you to dive up to 12m with a qualified instructor for 1 year.
If you've more time then opt for the PADI Open Water Diver course at Calypso Dive Centre, or at Prodive, the PADI 5-star dive centre at the Beacon Hotel in Plettenberg Bay.
The world's most popular scuba diving course, the 4-day Open Water Diver has introduced millions of people to an amazing underwater world. You have to be 14 years or older and reasonably fit (if in doubt, consult your physician). After qualifying you'll be able to dive anywhere in the world up to a depth of 18m.
Prodive also offers a 3-hour beginners' course with a qualified instructor, which includes a pool session and a sea dive.
