The Kirstenbosch Craft and Food Market is popular with visitors from South Africa and abroad. Located opposite the world famous botanical gardens, with Table Mountain as a backdrop, a visit to this market guarantees a relaxed Sunday morning, whether you are a serious shopper, or just prefer to browse around, enjoying the atmosphere.

Did you know?

The Kirstenbosch Craft Market runs twice in December? Not on the last Sunday of the month, but on the 2nd and the 3rd, so you can shop around for Christmas gifts!

The Kirstenbosch Craft and Food Market has long been second to none when it comes to selling good quality crafts. And now it's added delicious, artisanal foods and into the mix.

Held on the last Sunday of every month, this Cape Town market draws big crowds to the grounds of the Stone Cottages diagonally opposite the main entrance to the world famous Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden.

As an international visitor to Cape Town, a visit to this market may be one of the highlights of your trip, and if you're a local, there are few more pleasant ways of wiling away a few hours on a Sunday morning.

There is always plenty to choose from because more than 200 artisans and craftspeople display and sell their products here, ranging from unique wood carvings to beautifully fashioned jewellery, clothing, jewellery and pottery. You're sure to find the perfect gift or souvenir from South Africa– don’t forget that many of the sellers will be happy to bargain with you.

A visit to this craft market in Cape Town won't be complete without a stop at one of the many food stalls, selling anything from traditional preserves and pastries to special artisanal breads (and the organisers are hoping to be able to include craft beer soon too). And while you tuck into something delicious, enjoy the music that will be provided by some of the University of Cape Town's Big Band.

Your children are also well-catered for. Let them browse for a new, colourful ornament for their bedroom or spend time at the petting farm or go for a pony ride.

The market runs from 9am until around 3pm. It is closed in the winter months of June, July and August but in December there's a bonus because the market is held on two consecutive Sundays to cater for those who want to shop for that special Christmas gift.

Once your shopping is done, you might wish to take a stroll across the road to the beautiful botanical gardens, where you can enjoy a picnic, or just admire the spectacular displays of plants and flowers, a perfect way to end the day.
