Step back in time when you visit the original 1920s homestead that is now Kirkman’s Kamp, an &Beyond Africa safari lodge in Mpumalanga's legendary Sabi Sand Game Reserve that shares unfenced borders with the Kruger National Park.
Perched high over the Sand River, Kirkman's Kamp and its 18 cottages look out over sweeping green lawns that stretch down to the edge of a bluff overlooking rocks where leopards den and tall knobthorn acacias stand sentinel.
The whole ambience of the camp is colonial: its timeless tranquillity symbolised by the brightly gleaming brass doorknobs and the authentic furniture from years gone by. Inside the spacious main lodge, stuffed heads of animal trophies peer down on big comfortable couches and gleaming wooden floors.
Outside the cottages, potted ferns stand beside old style wooden benches, with hurricane lamps swinging above them.
Inside your room the atmosphere stays strictly colonial. Polished cement floors, pale blue and white curtains, and grey velvet tub chairs are set off by snowy white bed linen while genuine black-and-white photographs of hunting parties adorn the dove grey walls. Bathrooms have white, wood-panelled walls, white claw-footed baths and roomy showers.
But if you've chosen Sabi Sand Game Reserve it's the fabulous game you've really come to see. The Big 5 are all here, plus scores of other creatures. Your highly trained ranger and Shangaan tracker will take you on early morning and evening game drives where you are witness to some of South Africa's best game sightings.
At night, with a handheld spotlight, you'll spot the fascinating nocturnal creatures that hide away during the day. Look out for civet, genet, scrub hares, bush babies and, of course, leopards hunting.
