Health hydros offer a combination of a traditional spa experience and focussed hydrotherapy treatments. These establishments differ from the generic spa concept in that the water-treatment facilities are where majority of the therapies take place. While a spa is all about relaxing and pampering, health hydros are a bit more focussed on the holistic approach - as well as teaching/training clients about a new, healthier way of being. Of course, the usual facials, manicures, massages are also available as part of the deal.
Health Hydros in South Africa, are known for their excellent facilities which include: steam baths, sitz baths, saunas, Turkish baths, water-jet massage facilities (benefits the circulation), jacuzzis and swimming pools (some hydros have heated swimming pools). The various hydros also have gymnasium facilities and are generally situated in scenic areas that are great for walking and hiking in the outdoors.
The three best-known South African health hydros include Hoogland Hydro, outside Pretoria, The Hydro at Stellenbosch (in the Idas Valley) and Brookdale Health Hydro in the KwaZulu Natal Midlands. All of these hydros are quite different from each other and offer unique insights into health and wellbeing.
Hoogland has individualised programmes - be it weight loss, treating medical issues or just dealing with a bit of urban stress; in addition to the hydrotherapies on offer The Hydro at Stellenbosch focuses on correct nutrition and the elimination of toxins (key to ongoing physical health); Brookdale is known for it's Nutri-Fit programme - a lifestyle approach to exercise, healthy eating and stress management.
The health hydros all have their own unique packages aimed at the various needs of clients. There are day packages, mid-week packages, weekend packages and week-long packages. For those who really need to face up to their exhaustion and stress levels there are even two to three-week packages on offer.
