Greg Minaar, who has won three downhill world mountain biking championships, grew up in KwaZulu-Natal.
Giba Gorge MTB Park is based in the Stockville Quarry area near the Marianhill Toll Plaza, less than 20 minutes drive from Durban. The venue is ideal for those cyclists passing through KwaZulu-Natal keen try out the well-designed dirt tracks and off-road trails.
The dirt jumps at this venue are widely regarded as being the best in South Africa and Giba Gorge MTB Park regularly hosts professional cycling events.
For visitors who haven’t brought their bicycles out to South Africa, Giba Gorge also has a cycling shop that offers both rental and sales of equipment for each of the three cycling disciplines offered.
Mountain bikers can choose from three different routes, depending on their skill level. The longest of these routes is 10.2km and the shortest is 6.7km. The scenery along these routes includes waterfalls and beautiful trees.
Downhill riders can race the clock on Giba Gorge’s steep 1.2km downhill track, which includes several opportunities to get airborne!
BMX riders who make use of the dedicated track will probably spend more time in the air than on the dirt track, which often hosts top BMX competitions.
The facilities at Giba Gorge include picnic sites, camping sites, toilets, showers and ample parking.
There is a restaurant on the premises where riders may replenish their bodies after a tiring circuit. In the evenings, the bar at Giba Gorge is a great venue for socialising.
Safety precautions are taken seriously at Giba Gorge MTB Park and paramedics are on call in the event of an accident.
