An authentic multi-cultural experience

Gaabo Motho Cultural Village

Gaabo Motho Cultural Village Gaabo Motho Cultural Village

At Gaabo Motho Cultural Village enjoy the thundering war dance of the Zulu, have your fortune told by a sangoma (spiritual leader), sip on home-brewed African beer and overnight in a strikingly painted Ndebele hut. This cultural village in the North West immerses you in a multi-cultural experience while you learn how various traditional communities live.

Did you know?

Bophuthatswana, declared a Tswana 'homeland' in 1977, is now part of the North West province.

Tribal traditions and culture are a historic and continuing way of life in South Africa, and at Gaabo Motho Cultural Village, a cultural village near Pretoria, you have the privilege of experiencing the culture of 4 prominent tribes, the Zulu, Ndebele, Tswana and Venda, who peacefully co-exist here.

Each tribe is distinctive in their dress, dance, music and language. The Zulu tongue is arguably the most expressive, while the Ndebele are known for their stunning geometric designs on their dwellings. It's this combined experience that makes Gaabo Motho Cultural Village a fascinating stopover for visitors wanting an insight into South Africa's tribal cultures.

On arrival you are immersed into the rhythm of Africa as various tribal dances are performed to the rousing beat of drums. The gumboot dance, originated by migrant workers on the gold mines, is also performed, as well as beautiful church and wedding songs.

You are invited to join traditional African games as they have been played for hundreds of years, and to learn about the Tswana spirit, their graves and maternity ward. You can also visit a traditional healer who will throw bones to predict your future, and afterwards enjoy traditional beer at a shebeen shack called 'Mokhukhu'.

This North West cultural village also makes a memorable overnight stay. There are conventional double rooms with great views of the surrounding village, as well as a colourfully decorated Ndebele village consisting of 4 thatched huts, and 2 more Ndebele huts combined with the Westernised huts. There is also a Zulu village with traditional huts built in accordance to the standards and specifications of the Zulu tradition.
