Chandani means ‘moonlight’, which owners Jagdish Vanzara and his South African wife, Dina, chose to reflect the restaurant’s shimmering décor.

Housed in a charming, historic Victorian building, Chandani offers an intimate series of dining rooms bathed in exotic colours that are beautifully accentuated at night. Each features an elaborate ‘zaroka’ (antique balcony), and is decorated with pieces from India. The rear of the restaurant opens onto a pleasant courtyard – a peaceful spot to enjoy the outdoor air on a balmy Cape Town evening.

The owners are fastidious about authenticity, and the restaurant’s spices are imported directly from India … as are its chefs!

Chandani Indian and Vegetarian Restaurant offers dishes from all over India that are mostly inspired by the Mughal monarchs who followed the ancient Hindu tradition of vegetarianism. So while non-vegetarian options are available, the restaurant predominantly caters for vegetarians, vegans and Jain vegetarians.

Meat can be substituted for vegetables on request, and dishes can be prepared without animal products, such as ghee, cream and butter, if necessary.

Vanzara says his signature dishes include brinjal masala, dhal maharajah and his tasty vegetarian curries, usually finished off with a cool mango lassi or warming masala chai.

Lunchtimes are a buffet affair, while dinners are reserved for Chandani’s so-called curry house à la carte menu.
