Did you know?

Brigit Filmer Spa & Skin was announced as runner-up in the Day Spa Category of the Les Nouvelles Esthetiques Spa Awards in 2011.

Brigit Filmer, owner of Brigit Filmer Spa & Skin in KwaZulu-Natal, has practised in the field of health and wellness since 1983.

Placing emphasis on the value of experience, she insists her therapists must have been in the industry for a minimum of five years. She also ensures ongoing training to maintain the high standards of treatment at her spa.

Brigit Filmer Spa & Skin is situated in the hilly, upper highway area of Gillitts just outside Durban, in an atmosphere of tree-filled tranquillity. Its superb décor seeks to channel the calmness of its surrounds. The spa is accredited by the South African Association of Health and Skincare Professionals.

Hydrotherapy treatments include steam and sauna rooms, a cold water plunge pool and jacuzzi, a floatation tank, and the Rasul, an Arabian cleansing ritual where herbally infused mud is applied to the skin and then washed away.

A menu of massages covers all parts of the body, with special treatments for sportsmen and expectant mums. The two-hour long Signature Serenity Aromatherapy Massage includes an Indian head massage and reflexology. Exfoliation, tanning and slimming can be added to your choice.

A range of facials offers cleansing, regeneration, lifting and moisturising. Top of the range of facial treatments is the Guinot hydradermie, which exercises and stimulates facial muscles at a deep level.

For teenagers, Filmer has designed a series of packages to treat the specific problems people of this age group encounter. These packages incorporate cleansing, peeling, massage and grooming.

Further treatments focus on the hands and feet, and on body hair reduction. Exfoliation, tanning and slimming are additional options. Make-up application is offered for special occasions, or can be taught to those who wish to look glamorous on a daily basis.

Product lines are carefully selected, and besides Guinot include Dermalogica, OPI and the animal-friendly, locally produced Six Skin Care.

Best time to visit

Any time of the year is good for spa pampering, be it KwaZulu-Natal’s steamy summer (November to March) or mild winter (May to July). An advantage of Gillitts is that it is at a higher altitude (550m) than seaside cities such as Durban, and thus the coastal humidity is reduced.

Around the area

Attractions in the area include the Umgeni Steam Railway at Kloof. On the last Sunday of the month, you can take a train journey between Kloof and Inchanga (Cato Ridge) stations.

The Marianhill Monastery is 8km away and makes for an interesting visit.

A drive through the scenic Valley of a Thousand Hills is a visual treat not to be missed. Here you will find the Krantzkloof Nature Reserve, the Shongweni and Inanda dams, and cultural villages.

Where to stay

A number of B&Bs can be found in Gillitts and other nearby towns. Durban, just a half-hour drive away, has the full spectrum of accommodation types and grades.
