A panorama of scenic delights

Blyde River Canyon

The Blyde River canyon has spectacular views

Go on a geological joyride to the Blyde River Canyon. Follow the famed Panorama Route and begin with a photo-stop at the impressive Berlin Falls that tumble 80m into a clear pool below, surrounded by ferns and wildflowers. Keep an eye out on your way for some fine river swimming spots. The road swoops down between forested valleys then ascends, twisting into the clouds to bring you to God’s Window with its panoramic views of the Lowveld escarpment.

Tear yourself away, and head for the Lisbon Falls – where spectacular twin cascades plummet to the gorge below. Then make your way to the Pinnacle, a millennia-old  impressive column of rock that rises 30m vertically from the undergrowth below.

Or head north, from Vaalhoek, to the confluence of the Blyde River and Treur River, where 1000s of years of water erosion have scoured out the surreal Bourke’s Luck Potholes. Nearby is the Blyde River Gorge, so stop at each of the view sites to appreciate the high-rise sandstone cliffs and thundering waters of this natural wonder.

Don't miss the rock formations at the Three Rondavels, with their red sandstone walls and forested green ‘roofs’ before taking a break at the Blydepoort Holiday Resort. Get active and hike, ride a horse or just take a walk to the tranquil Blyde River Dam.

Blyde means joy – make this your own joyous journey.
