Modern Day Pleasure Trekkers

Oxwagon Lodge

Oxwagon Lodge, near Hartbeespoort Dam, is a great place to learn a bit more about South Africa’s Voortrekker heritage. Spend the night in a converted ox wagon that dates was made in the 1800’s – don’t worry, all the modern conveniences are readily on tap!

Oxwagon Lodge A bona-fide oxwagon 'hotel'

Did you know?

On the same property as Oxwagon Lodge you'll find a double-decker bus that 'doubles up' as a back-packer lodge.

For a quirky weekend adventure, why not book into Oxwagon Lodge? This decidedly offbeat lodge is situated on the R511, close to Harbeespoort Dam - and from your ‘room' there are great views of the Dam and the Witwatersberg.

The lodge is certainly unique. All the rooms are converted (and refurbished) ox-wagons that date from 1840 to 1934. The wagons can accommodate five people at any one time and when the lodge is full a maximum of 27 people can be accommodated. For those who don't know much about South African history, you can read about the story of each individual ox-wagon as used by the early Voortrekkers (pioneers) on plaques outside your wagon.  While every effort has been made to recreate the days of the trekkers, modern creature comforts are all on offer. There is also a makeshift museum on the property that pays homage to these adventurous pioneers.

There's a fun outdoor lapa bar area, and dining under the stars around a fire also adds to the authenticity of the experience.  All the guests are expected to pitch in and braai together, which makes for great opportunities to get to know each other and exchange stories. Food consists of good old boerekos, boerewors and chops (on the braai), robust fresh salads and rooster brood as well as pap and gravy - traditional favourites.

There is lots to experience in the area from your laager base, visit the local art galleries, enjoy a pamper session at a local spa or take part in the numerous adventure activities in the area. Watersports on Hartbeespoort Dam are a highlight, but if you're in a more chilled space - a picnic on the banks of the dam is also a fine idea.

One thing's for sure - there are not many places in the world where you can sleep over in a bona fide oxwagon!
