Situated in Stellenbosch, home to some of the finest restaurants in the country, Overture has claimed a name for itself mainly because of the excellent and original dishes constructed by celebrity chef, Bertus Basson, and his counterpart, Craig Cormack.

Basson doesn’t hold back on the dining experience and, while he is happy to experiment, traditional classic cooking methods still shine through. The menu changes to reflect the seasons, and if it’s not in season there’s little chance that Basson and his team will consider including it on the menu.

If you are visiting during the summer months, try the twice-baked parmesan soufflé made with parmesan cream and beetroot variations, or sample the cauliflower risotto, charred baby leak, Paradyskloof pine rings and ricotta paired with a delightful Mimosa Chardonnay 2009. For your main course, what about the matured entrecote (a cut of beef) or ox tongue, with pumpkin, gem squash and pomme cocotte (potatoes cooked in butter), with a bottle of Hidden Valley Gems 2008? Finish it all off with an almond and apple tart with a crème anglaise, raisin purée and cinnamon ice-cream. (And that's just the lunch menu...)

On offer is a four or five-course chef’s menu and an eight-course tasting menu, with the option of wine-pairing which allows you to taste a different wine with each course, carefully selected by the sommelier.

Dining is unhurried, as it should be. The restaurant has glass windows to let in the incredible views of the Hidden Valley and the open kitchen gives an air of festivity. You can enjoy a wine tasting at the Hidden Valley wine tasting centre. You need to book ahead, as Basson's culinary skills are in demand.

How to get here

Take the N2 to Somerset West and turn onto the R310 and then take the Annandale Road. There is a detailed map on the Overture website.

Best time to visit

Open for lunch Tuesday to Sunday, and dinner on Thursday and Friday. Booking is essential.
