Did you know?
The first match at Newlands was played in 1890, between Stellenbosch and Villagers.
DHL Newlands is the home of Stormers (Super 15) and Western Province (Currie Cup) teams, while South Africa’s national team, the Springboks, generally plays one match here every year.
The stadium is easily accessible and close to shopping centres like Cavendish Square for pre-match requirements, as well as a variety of bars and restaurants for festivities after the game.
The Super 15 kicks off in February each year, which is a great time to be in Cape Town. If you are based in Australia or New Zealand, check out when your local team is due at Newlands to play the Stormers, and make a plan to be there.
Capetonians love their rugby and because of this there are generally very few, if any, empty seats at the stadium for Super Rugby and international matches. In recent years, the Stormers faithful have been entertained by heroes like Schalk Burger, Jean de Villiers, Bryan Habana, Breyton Paulse, De Wet Barry and Gio Aplon. Despite an 11-year trophy drought leading up to 2012, the Stormers were regarded as one of the most exciting teams in the world due to their style of play.
The Currie Cup, South Africa’s provincial rugby championship, takes place during the latter months of the year, and if you’re visiting while this is taking place, you’ll enjoy the Newlands experience if you take the time to do so.
Some famous moments in rugby have taken place at Newlands. Do you remember seeing Jonah Lomu run over Mike Catt to score one of his four tries when the All Blacks thrashed England in the semi-final of the 1995 Rugby World Cup? The opening match of the tournament in which South Africa beat Australia to set in motion a remarkable story was also played there.
