Did you know?
‘Sangoma’ is an isiZulu word for a diviner.
The giant Sun City Resort, nestled in an ancient volcano in the Pilanesberg mountains of the North West province, offers up a wide selection of activities.
You can play the tables at the various casinos, ride a 1,8m-high break at the Valley of Waves, take a Lazy River ride or plunge down a terrifyingly high slide from the top of Adventure Mountain.
You can jet-ski, parasail, play golf, ride horses, go up in a hot-air balloon, go quad-biking, clay-target shooting or simply curl up somewhere with a potboiler of a novel.
And once you’ve done all that, why not take a short stroll down to the Motseng Cultural Village and be amazed at what you’ll learn about eight of South Africa’s cultural groups?
Motseng isn’t a static display or some boring museum diorama. It’s a living cultural village. If you see a wonderful piece of crafting in the village shop, chances are you’ll probably meet its maker somewhere outside.
On a guided tour of the Motseng Cultural Village, you get to sit down with the local sangoma (diviner), have him or her throw the bones for you and discuss matters from your future life.
For special evening occasions and the odd conference or incentive, there’s the village boma, a traditional gathering place where the elders gather and discuss items of interest to the community.
Motseng even caters for those who love the night life – there’s an authentic township-style shebeen (informal drinking spot) where you can shoot a round of pool and hear the pumping sounds of kwaito, South African hip-hop music that is taking the world by storm.
Another positive aspect to the Motseng Cultural Village is the fact that it employs a number of members of the local community, either as guides, shop assistants or crafters who sell their wares in the village shop.
