If you're looking for an ideal family safari then &Beyond Kirkman’s Kamp is an excellent choice. It's one of the best loved lodges in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, adjacent to the Kruger National Park in Mpumalanga.

Did you know?

Kirkman's Kamp offers specialist safaris - such as birding, tracking, photographic and walking safaris

Built in the 1920s on a historic homestead, Kirkman’s Kamp has retained its luxurious colonial atmosphere and gracious style. It has 18 air-conditioned guest suites with en suite bathrooms, separate showers, free standing baths and private verandas with spectacular views of the untamed wilderness.

Its large sitting room with 1920s ambience overlooks rolling lawns. Breakfasts and lunches are served on shady verandas, while dinners are enjoyed in the boma or in romantic candlelit bush settings. Guests can cool off in the sparkling pool or browse in the safari shop.

Kids visiting Kirkman’s Kamp have the time of their lives. Families staying at Kirkman’s Kamp are matched with rangers who are trained to interact with younger guests. They engage them in bush activities such as collecting pods, feathers, bugs and leaves, and teach them how to identify different animal species.

Special ‘Pooh Walks’ search out animal droppings and teach children the basics of tracking. Bark-rubbing expeditions add to the fun. With parents’ permission, rangers might take youngsters on carefully supervised target shooting with a pellet gun, go frogging or fishing in the Sand River, or teach them how to make fire using twigs.

During leisure hours children may help with the decoration of cupcakes or bake cookies in the kitchen. They can also enjoy bush tennis, croquet, bowls, soccer and treasure hunts around the lodge. A children’s bush banquet, featuring 'prickly porcupine’s pizza' or 'python’s penne pasta', and marshmallows toasted around the campfire, is another special treat. While they eat they listen to fascinating Shangaan folk tales.

For safety reasons children under six cannot participate in the twice-daily game drives unless the family books a private vehicle. However, shorter drives can be arranged in the later morning to allow younger children to enjoy the wildlife from a safer distance.

Experienced childminders can be booked to care for younger children at the lodge while parents go on game drives.
