One of the largest recorded fish caught off a jet ski was an 85kg black marlin off a cuta trace and sardine bait.
Just you and the ocean, sea spray biting your face, hair flapping in the wind, the power of your jet ski skimming you over the water. It is unadulterated freedom defined and, since it’s not difficult to master one of these floating beasts, makes it an ideal holiday pursuit.
The shorter, narrower jet skis (also known as wet bikes) offer more manoeuvrability, while the wider, longer machines are more stable and better suited to beginners.
Choose a solo craft if you prefer to stand, a zippy sport craft for tight manoeuvres, or a two-seater for double the fun. An engine shut-off clip attached to your wrist cuts the ignition if you fall off and, when learning, low speed and slow turns will give you a feel for the craft and how it handles.
With over 3 000km of coastline, plus numerous dams and lagoons, South Africa has a wealth of destinations that lend themselves to jet-skiing.
On the Cape West Coast, the Langebaan lagoon at Club Mykonos has a 10km ride to Schaapen Island and back. The Theewaterskloof Dam near Villiersdorp is one of the biggest masses of water in South Africa, offering jet-skiing and other water sports.
Much further north, at McDougall’s Bay in Port Nolloth, windsurfing, jet-skiing and kayaking take place in the cooler Atlantic waters.
On the border of Eastern Province and KwaZulu-Natal, the Wild Coast Sun’s Waterworld is a jet-skiers’ delight, or you might prefer Hazelmere Dam, half an hour from Durban, where wildebeest and zebra look on as you play.
Across from the Cabanas Hotel at Sun City, Waterworld offers another jet-skiing destination, far from the ocean, but only a few hours from Johannesburg and Pretoria. Not far away in the mountain and bushveld surrounds of North West province is the Hartbeespoort Dam, a mecca for this adventure activity.
You're most likely at the coast so fresh seafood is the way to go.
