South Africa has been one of the world’s best golfing holiday destinations for some time. Golfers from around the world are continually amazed by the standard of the courses they play on in South Africa, as well as the general standard of the supporting infrastructure.

Did you know?

The first recorded instance of a golf game in South Africa was in Cape Town in 1885.

South Africa has numerous golfing holiday tour operators who can arrange your golf adventures around the country, according to your budget and available time.

Even if you aren’t part of an arranged golfing tour, it’s still very easy to hire a car from one of the country’s major airports and opt for an independent golf safari. South Africa has excellent roads and travelling around is a lot easier than most international golfers might expect, despite the vastness of the country.

From Johannesburg, wildlife resorts such as the Kruger National Park are just a few hours' drive away and some of the country’s top courses are situated near such parks.

Some of the courses to consider in the northern part of South Africa (within driving distance of OR Tambo International Airport) include Sun City, Legends Golf and Safari Resort, Leopard Creek and the Hans Merensky Golf Course.

The Western Cape province, which includes the city of Cape Town as well as the famous Garden Route, should be on every golfer’s bucket list.

Fancourt, a golf estate in the Garden Route town of George, has three world-class courses with luxury accommodation.

The Eastern Cape also has several excellent golf holiday establishments, such as St Francis Golf Lodge, which has received some rave reviews on respected independent travel tip website, TripAdvisor.

A traveller from Glasgow, who writes under the name CRK62, visited during 2011 and wrote afterward: “This destination, recommended by a friend, exceeded our high expectations… The Links golf course, while it has some spectacular views, is typical Nicklaus, fine if you are playing well, but if you are not the Bay course down the road offers a more friendly challenge.”
