Former British prime minister, Winston Churchill, based himself in Estcourt while serving as a war correspondent during the Anglo-Boer War.
The activities offered at the five-star Zulu Waters Private Game Reserve (formerly known as the Dalton Private Reserve) include game viewing, white water rafting, horse riding, clay pigeon shooting and helicopter tours.
The 7 000-acre reserve is near the town of Estcourt, a two-hour drive from Durban or a one-hour flight from Johannesburg for those who wish to arrange a charter flight from O.R. Tambo International Airport.
Accommodation options at Zulu Waters are all top class. In addition to the main lodge, there are chalets along the Bushman’s River and a lakeside cottage. The main lodge has an amazing view across the valley, giving guests the opportunity to watch the wildlife from the comfort of the outside deck.
Wildlife at the reserve includes 10 rhino, some 80 buffalo, wildebeest, zebra and various species of antelope. While there is a game viewing vehicle for transport around the reserve, the more exciting option is to get amongst the game on horseback. The terrain on the estate ranges from flat grassland to rocky hills, allowing for a challenging ride.
A talented chef serves up a variety of delicious meals throughout the day. Almost every ingredient used to prepare meals at Zulu Waters is produced or grown on the premises.
In the summer months, when the river is high, white water rafting down the Bushman’s River is an unforgettable experience, with an excellent variety of rushing rapids and flat sections of water that allow for more sedate sightseeing. The white water rafting covers some 10km of river. Water levels drop somewhat during the winter months, excellent for trout fishing in the same section of river.
