Buffalo Park in East London hosts first-class and international cricket matches during South Africa’s summer months between October and March. The stadium is known for its friendly atmosphere and its accessibility. Some top matches have taken place here over the years, including the 2003 Cricket World Cup.

Did you know?

India beat South Africa by five wickets in the first international match at Buffalo Park in 1992.

With a capacity of just 15 000, Buffalo Park isn’t the largest cricket ground around, but it offers an intimate experience for spectators and little hassle for those arriving at and leaving the ground.

The stadium boasts an excellent floodlight system, allowing it to host day/night matches. The Proteas, South Africa’s national cricket team, have played regularly at this ground since returning from international isolation in 1991.

The traditionally 'flat' pitch allows batting teams to post large totals, with scores in excess of 300 regularly recorded in 50-over-a-side matches. In 2005, South Africa and England both passed the 300 mark in the same match, while in 1999, West Indian Shivnarine Chanderpaul scored 150 in a one-day international (ODI) at the ground – an extremely good ODI score.

But there is opportunity for bowlers, too – former South Africa captain Shaun Pollock took 19 ODI wickets at an average on 19 on this ground.

During the 2003 Cricket World Cup, three matches were played here.

The Border team and Warriors domestic franchise play games in East London and have some dedicated followers.
