Did you know?
Translated from the vernacular Zulu, 'uMnini' means 'owner of'.
The Umnini Craft Village is a brightly decorated arts and crafts market that straddles the N2 highway about 10km south of the seaside town of Amanzimtoti in southern KwaZulu-Natal.
Roughly halfway between Amanzimtoti and Umkomaas you’ll come upon the Umnini Craft Village where more than 20 crafters, all from the local community, work in an open-fronted trading kiosk painted in primary coloured ethnic patterns.
The Umnini Craft Village is conveniently split to occupy both sides of the N2, catering for travellers heading both north and south.
All the craft for sale is created by residents of the surrounding areas of Umnini, Dududu, Umgababa, Umkomaas and Ilfracombe. All proceeds are ploughed back into their respective communities.
Among the items on display are a variety of pottery containers such as traditional beer pots, serving dishes and ashtrays; beautifully designed traditional Zulu beadwork necklaces, bracelets and headbands; wire sculptures; woven grass mats and baskets; stone and wooden sculptures; giant cutlery sets and much more.
The traditional crafts found along the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal are distinctly different to those of the North Coast, so the Umnini Craft Village presents an opportunity to purchase holiday mementoes with a uniquely local flavour.
A useful single-lane road and overhead bridge allows access from one side of the N2 to the other. During winter, roadside traders in the vicinity sell avocados, while in summer they display bananas, paw-paws and fresh fish for sale to passers-by.
