The Fresh Earth Food Store is a health, vegetarian and vegan haven that is a restaurant, coffee shop, bakery and retail shop all rolled into 1. It’s the ideal spot at which to browse, shop, lunch or just drink something and catch your breath.
The store, in the Johannesburg suburb of Emmarentia, is an absolute blessing if you have a sweet tooth and crave quality chocolate and pastries, but don’t eat eggs or any animal products. It has a vegan raw chocolate mousse cake on offer that is just sensational. That’s over and above its brownies, fruit tarts, cookies and rusks. The bakery section is a must.
This vegetarian restaurant serves a daily vegetarian luncheon buffet from noon, from a cost of R72 person and up.
Favourites on the buffet include satisfying stews that feature what’s seasonal and freshest that day at the market; curries so fragrant they draw you in; refreshing salsas and salads; delicious quiches; and sweet treats.
If it’s just coffee, a slice of cake and a chat with a friend you’re after, then kick out your heels, feast your eyes on the selection of baked goodies and let your gaze wander over the vast selection of goods in the shop. Anything from guilt-free make-up, vitamins, and teas and coffees to inspiring recipe books and CDs line the shelves.
This health emporium stocks organic produce, gluten-free breads and pastries, veggie ready-meals and organic baby food under the Toddler and Baby Tastes brands. What’s more, it’s situated around the corner from an Asian spice shop, a bookstore and a greengrocer.
And thumbs up to the Fresh Earth Food Store for making donations to worthy causes such as the Salvation Army and primate care, and for recycling all its refuse.

The Fresh Earth Food Store is located in Komatie Road, Emmarentia, just off the main road of Barry Hertzog Avenue, which you can access from the M1 highway via Empire Road.

You can either organise a transfer or taxi from your hotel to Emmarentia, or pop through to the store in your own car.
What will it cost
The store stocks a wide range of goodies, so the price will vary depending on what you’re after. At the cafe, cooked breakfasts start at R44, salads at R57, wraps at R38, burgers and melts at R36, and gluten-free pizzas at R63. There’s also a good selection of well-priced smaller meals, as well as smoothies, shakes and hot drinks.

There a selection of guest houses in the area, but for 5-star luxury, try The Westcliff hotel on nearby Jan Smuts Avenue.
