Guest houses and B&Bs
Guest house and B&B accommodation in South Africa provides a wonderful variety of options to suit all tastes and pockets.
There are thousands of guest houses and bed & breakfast establishments across the length and breadth of the country, which are a great alternative to hotel accommodation. They offer warm South African hospitality and great service in a more homely environment.
In some of South Africa's smaller towns these may be the only accommodation options available. Many offer amenities similar to those found in hotels, including dining facilities, airport transfers and Internet access.
By July 2010 there were 1 580 graded B&Bs in South Africa and 2 685 guest houses, together comprising more than 30 000 graded rooms in the country's guest house and B&B accommodation sectors.
Do bear in mind though, that grading in South Africa is voluntary and there may be many guest houses and B&Bs in South Africa that do not have a star grading, but which are also quality establishments.
However it is advisable that, if a guest house or B&B does not have a star grading, to check whether it belongs to a reputable association or accommodation association, as these require their members to meet certain minimum criteria and requirements.
These associations include:
- the not-for-profit National Accommodation Association of South Africa (NAA-SA), which is affiliated to the Federated Hospitality Association of Southern Africa (Fedhasa),
- the privately-owned Guest House Accommodation of South Africa (GHASA)
- AA Travel Guides, which offers a quality assurance programme and publishes several accommodation guides, including the AA Hotels, Lodges, Guest Houses, B&Bs Guide.
