Nightlife in Braamfontein, Johannesburg
Did you know?Randlords has spectacular 360 degree views of the Johannesburg skyline.
One of Braamfontein’s most iconic nightlife spots is Randlords, a rooftop bar and lounge, located on the 22nd floor of South Point Towers. Known for its exclusive corporate and private events, Randlords hosts public events too; visit their website for details.
Another Braamfontein icon, The Milner Park, is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the city. It is home to the second oldest pub in the city, Kitchener’s Carvery Bar. It is also home to Great Dane, a popular new arrival on the Braamfontein nightlife scene, with floors paved in coins and opening hours that stretch into the early morning.
Other bars in Braamfontein include the S-Bar, a bottle-only student hangout with a small, affordable menu; The Lounge and The Grove Bar at Lamunu Hotel on De Korte Street; and Johannesburg’s oldest bar, The Guildhall, which serves great Portuguese food and local beers.
For an evening meal, try Café de La Vie. Another fantastic Braamfontein restaurant is Narina Trogon. It's known for its seasonal, organic and free-range ingredients and has a cool, trendy interior, relaxed garden space and rooftop party venue.
If you're looking for more than an evening of eating, drinking and socialising, Braamfontein is home to the Johannesburg Theatre Complex and the Alexander Theatre, where you can watch local dance, drama and musical productions. There is also easy access to neighbouring Newtown's vibrant jazz clubs, bars and restaurants via the Nelson Mandela Bridge.
Historically, Braamfontein was Johannesburg's business hub but after the end of apartheid, the area began to deteriorate. A bold intervention by businesses working with the City of Johannesburg began a successful urban renewal project to revitalise this historic part of the city, with great success.
Its past may be part of what gives Braamfontein its unique charm, but it's an area with its eyes firmly on the future.
