Doyenne of the local spa world, Elisabeth Brandt, has created a range of spa products with a sense of place. Healing Earth’s dual range of spa products favours ingredients such as the hydrating Kalahari melon, the mongongo nut and the anti-oxidant Pinotage grape. The use of indigenous plants is backed by scientific research and the products are gaining a following in the South African spa industry and beyond.

Did you know?

The Pinotage grape is uniquely South African. It was created in 1925 when the Pinot Noir cultivar was crossed with Hermitage (also known as Cinsaut).

Spa veteran Elisabeth Brandt, who has been associated with some of the country’s top spas, has developed an organic line of African-inspired spa products and treatments called Healing Earth. She believes that using natural ingredients does wonders for the skin (not to mention the mind, body and soul).

There are two ranges in the collection: Earth Soul, which incorporates many indigenous African ingredients, and Pinotage Grape, based on the benefits of vinotherapy.

Key ingredients in the Earth Soul range include hydrating Kalahari melon, firming African ginger, repairing African potato and oils from the baobab, marula, mongongo nut, argan (a tree endemic to Morocco) and Kigelia africana, or sausage tree. These have all been fully researched and scientifically approved. The range comprises body oils, polishes, butters, creams and wraps.

The Pinotage Grape range is rich in the anti-oxidants of vitamins C and E. It includes cleansers, toners, polishes, marks, serums, creams, oils and gels.

Cape-based Healing Earth adheres to responsible business practices in its manufacturing processes, ensuring all products are fully natural and made from sustainable ingredients. Local organic farmers are supported, and workers from disadvantaged communities near Cape Town are employed. The packaging is biodegradable and recyclable. Products are free of petrochemicals, preservatives, synthetics, colourants and parabens (used as preservatives in the cosmetics industry), and are not tested on animals.

Brandt says: 'We have a nurturing, conscious approach to beauty based upon love for oneself, one’s fellow human beings and the Earth we live on. By going back to the source and listening to the Earth’s secrets, we can truly live in serenity, harmony and balance.'

A number of spas allied to top game lodges are using the products, among them the Singita group, Wilderness Safaris, Shamwari, Sanbona, Tswalu and Kapama. Healing Earth is also making inroads into other African countries.
