The Yum Yum Restaurant in Tzaneen started out as a deli and tapas bar – a novel concept indeed for the fast food-loving town. The eatery has now became a legend in its own lunchtime, thanks to chef Jonathan Taylor's innovative menus, attention to presentation and attentive service staff.

Fresh, mostly organic, locally sourced produce takes centre stage at Yum Yum Restaurant, where virtually all the fruit, vegetables and herbs come from the nearby Anlon Farm, where they are naturally grown without the use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides.

Taylor has oodles of local and international cooking experience, which shows in the restaurant's eclectic and globally inspired menu – think goat’s cheese rolled in dukkah (a mixture of herbs, nuts and spices), or Cajun calamari with crumbed risotto balls.

A year after opening, Yum Yum expanded its menu to include more substantial meals, but with options to suit every palate and pocket. Inventive, garden-fresh salads generous enough to enjoy as a main meal are balanced with heartier fare like its famous gourmet beef burger, fillet steak done with a creamy pepper and brandy sauce, or, in winter, pot-roasted lamb shank.

Regular chef’s specials and catch-of-the-day fish options keep the menu new and tempting.

Yum Yum’s bright, contemporary interior, with its striking artwork and chandeliers, makes the perfect location for a smart business lunch. But there’s no doubt the covered outdoor patio is where diners most love to escape the heat of the summer.

Order a pitcher of mint-infused lemonade or a bottle of wine from the small but selective wine list and soak up the mellow Lowveld atmosphere while you 'um' and 'ah' over the deliciously hard-to-choose-from dessert menu.

Whether you swoon over Taylor’s smashed meringue with berries served with local Amarula cream liqueur, the caramel chocolate tart, or crackly caramel-topped crème brûlée; or round off your meal with an Arabica coffee espresso, Yum Yum is as good as its name suggests.
