Invoking the vibrational energy of sound,  colour and touch, you can enjoy this relaxing treatment at the spa of one of Johannesburg's most upmarket boutique hotels.

Did you know?

In 2012, the Saxon was named Africa's leading boutique hotel in the World Travel Awards for the sixth consecutive year.

Tibetan sound therapy is an ancient treatment that is now available in the heart of one of Johannesburg's snazziest suburbs.

It forms part of the 'signature therapy' offering at the Saxon Boutique Hotel and Spa in Sandton, one of South Africa's best-known boutique hotels.

You won't find Buddhist monks wandering around about in saffron robes playing the drums or banging their gongs but the spirit of their ancient healing secrets is now accessible to those living and staying in the city's northern suburbs.

One of the reasons that the Saxon is constantly singled out for awards is because it continually reinvents itself – and the fact that something as offbeat as its 'Signature sound therapy' is on offer is a tribute to the forward-thinking of this establishment.

As you walk into the carefully designed sound room, you notice an enormous copper gong and a number of metal bowls, varying in size. Originally from Tibet, the treatment uses a combination of bona fide Tibetan singing bowls, gongs and bells.

The bowls are placed on various chakra points and the sound reverberates with the chakras, creating a system of balance in the physical body. This sound vibration is said to penetrate deep into the cells (and cellular memory) which increases circulation in the body and creates a sense of well-being.

Sound therapy at the Saxon is not just about sound: in this case the sound therapy takes place on a heated water-bed with built in colour therapy enhancers that makes the healing experience even more powerful. The entire treatment lasts just one hour.
