The CTICC 'My Tree in Africa' initiative aims to assist conference delegates offset their flights through purchasing trees, which are planted in disadvantaged communities in and around Cape Town.
The Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) event greening initiatives have seen it become a leading environmentally sustainable convention centre. It takes environmental responsibility in all facets of its business, from infrastructure and operational policies to recycling programmes.
The convention centre has been proactive in developing innovative new sustainable strategies, not only to achieve its own green goals, but those of suppliers, meetings and events planners as well.
The CTICC has implemented a host sustainablity initiatives locally.
It has become one of the first convention centres globally to introduce and online event booking system.
A significant part of its business strategy is focused on enhanced energy and water efficiency and waste minimisation.
Some energy saving initiatives have included: retrofitting the CTICC with Compact Fluorescents (CFL) or Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) instead of conventional light bulbs; fitting motion sensors to escalators; installing light sensors in the meeting suites; introducing an advanced central building monitoring system; and insulating the external building to reduce energy loss and assist with off-peak cooling, heating and natural flush cooling at night.
The Cape Town International Conference Centre's event greening policies favour reusable and recyclable products and maximise the use of reusable items. To cut down on waste, all glass is recycled. Its administration offices have recycling bins for paper and exhibitors are encouraged to minimise waste generation. Waste is separated into different streams before it is collected for recovery and recycling purposes, and drainage systems are locked to prevent food and waste contamination from going into storm water system.
To save on water, all toilets have dual flush mechanisms and motion sensors have been installed in public toilets to reduce water wastage. Biodegradable soap is also provided.
