If you thought shark cage-diving was an intense and extreme way of getting closer to predators in their natural environment, then you are in for a great surprise. Try crocodile cage-diving in Oudtshoorn for the ultimate close encounter with an ancient predator.

Did you know?

An adult male Nile crocodile can weigh more than 1 000kg.

In a world first, the Cango Wildlife Ranch in Oudtshoorn offers a new form of extreme wildlife activity: crocodile cage-diving!

You will have heard of shark cage-diving, and this idea borrows much from that. With crocodile cage-diving you are lowered into a clear water pool in a bite-proof cage and into the company of 4m long Nile crocodiles, each with a bite pressure of over two tonnes per square inch. That's four times the amount of pressure a great white shark can exert.

The cages are specially built to withstand the incredible pressure of these ancient reptiles, and visitors are exposed to an up-close and personal view of them in their natural habitat, which few people have experienced.

Participants are kitted out with goggles and a snorkel and then secured in the specially designed cage. The cage is then lowered into the pool, home to five Nile crocodiles. The crocodiles will surround the cage to see if this latest visitor is a snack of some kind. To add to the experience, an underwater photograph is taken of you while you are surrounded by the reptiles.

The concept is the brainchild of Cango Wildlife Ranch MD Andrew Eriksen. Based on the same principle as shark cage-diving, the main difference is that these crocodiles seem to see man as their natural prey. More humans are killed by crocodiles in Africa than by lions. As a result, the experience is extraordinarily intense as the crocodiles are very interested, while sharks don't always take an interest in cage-divers.

Crocodile cage diving is not for the faint-hearted, but it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience something unique and tell a story no one back home is likely to top.
