Did you know?
Mokopane is also home to Zebediela, one of the biggest citrus estates in the southern hemisphere.
Mokopane's Arend Dieperink Museum showcases the history of the area, from over three million years ago to the recent past.
The Arend Dieperink Museum is a charming old stone building that was once a school. The museum has a rich collection of implements and artefacts that detail the human occupation of this beautiful region. Outside in the garden you will also find fascinating old farm implements, tractors and wagons.
Other exhibits at the museum include a replica of a typical bushveld house, the type of dwelling in which early white farmers lived. There's also a 'Caves through the Ages' exhibition, showing life as experienced by early hominids in nearby Makapan's Valley.
You can take a guided tour from the museum to the Makapan's Valley World Heritage Site, a significant paleontological and historical site, and sister to the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site in Sterkfontein.
The Makapan's Valley World Heritage Site is where Professor Raymond Dart, in 1936, discovered an Australopithecus fossil proving the presence of hominids here some 3,5 million years ago.
Makapan's Valley is also the site of a torrid battle between Chief Makapan's people and the Afrikaner Voortrekkers in the late 1800s.
Mokopane is a friendly bushveld town and a good base from which to explore the delights of the Waterberg, including game viewing, climbing, birding, bush walks and hiking.
