Ellerman House was a 2012 Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice™ award winner.
Ellerman House is as famous for its South African art collection as it is for its panoramic ocean views. Enjoying this 5-star boutique hotel’s art is a privilege reserved for its guests, who can relax and dine in the company of South African masters like Pierneef and Irma Stern.
The hotel now has 500 pieces by South African masters in a collection that was put together by the hotel’s owner, financier Paul Harris. A collection of portrait work by the likes of Maurice van Essche, Alexis Preller, Anton van Wouw and Pieter Wenning adorns the hotel’s entrance hall. There are landscapes by Frans Oerder and Erik Laubscher, as well as works by Preller, Gregoire Boonzaaier and Cecil Higgs interspersed throughout the living rooms of the hotel.
The inner halls are adorned with works by Thomas Bowler and Thomas Bains, and each room has a selection of original art for you to enjoy during your stay. The hotel also has a number of resistance works by, amongst others, George Pemba, Gerard Sekoto and Ephraim Ngatane.
Outside, green lawns and ocean views are enhanced by a collection of sculptures by artists such as Angus Taylor and Dylan Lewis.
The custom-built Ellerman Contemporary Gallery complements the collection of these South African masters by showing works by contemporary artists such as Anton Kannemeyer, Mary Sibande, Beezy Bailey and William Kentridge.
Given the calibre of the hotel's art, the United Kingdom’s Independent newspaper grouped Ellerman House alongside such legendary art hotels as the Ritz-Carlton in Singapore, Gramercy Park in New York, St James's Club & Hotel in London, the Cullen in Melbourne and La Colombe d'Or in Provence.
Guests of the hotel can access the art collection throughout their stay. Guided tours of the collection are available, but guests can also browse the art library and spend time appreciating the works on their own.
