Chef Peter Tempelhoff is an award-winning South African chef, a Relais & Chateaux Grand Chef and undoubtedly one of the most talented stars to emerge from the industry in recent years. Global by design but wholly South African in influence, his conceptual approach to cuisine is refreshing, different and very exciting.

Peter Tempelhoff has joined famous chefs Jamie Oliver and Mario Batali as a Global Feedie Ambassador. The campaign assists in raising funds to feed impoverished schoolchildren around the world.

Rumour has it that chef Peter Tempelhoff was born clutching a wooden spoon – because creating culinary magnificence was something he was born to do.

Tempelhoff is a rare creature – a hugely talented chef who understands economics, having studied the subject at university. Fortunately for the rest of us, his passion for cooking saw him change direction, and he enrolled at the Institute of Culinary Arts in Cape Town in 1996, where he finished top of his class and landed a much-coveted bursary to attend the Culinary Institute of America.

Upon his return to South Africa, he started working at the prestigious Grande Roche Hotel in Paarl, before moving to London’s Quo Vadis under the tutelage of chef Marco Pierre White, a Michelin-starred luminary. He also spent time at Giorgio Locatelli's famous restaurant (with one Michelin star), Zafferano.

Tempelhoff became the executive chef at the award-winning Automat restaurant in Mayfair, London, in 2005 and recognition soon followed.

After making his mark overseas, he returned to the Cape, and while working at the Grande Provence wine estate in Franschhoek, won the Sunday Times Chef of the Year 2007 title and put the restaurant on the Eat Out magazine's Top 10 Restaurants in South Africa list.

Always up for a challenge, in 2008 he took up the position of overseeing restaurants of 'The Collection by Liz McGrath', all Relais & Chateaux restaurants. This resulted in media exposure for culinary excellence, in particular at the Greenhouse restaurant at Cellars-Hohenhort hotel, which went on to be voted South Africa's best restaurant in the 2011 Eat Out Top 10 Awards.

In 2011, Tempelhoff achieved the title of Relais & Chateaux Grand Chef, and was invited to cook at the Relais & Chateaux Grands Chefs dinners in London and New York in 2012 and 2013 – quite an achievement.

He currently holds the title of executive chef at The Collection by Liz McGrath, and at the end of 2013 opened Mondiall Kitchen & Bar in the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town – a restaurant with a growing reputation. He is also involved with not one but two wine labels namely Marvelous and Yardstick, and who knows what's next on the agenda for this multi-talented chef and entrepreneur.

Tempelhoff continues to support young chefs and their endeavours by sharing his incredible knowledge, as well as doing his bit for charity.
