Did you know?
Some of the varieties of olives grown in the Franschhoek Valley include Mission, Frantoio, Manzanilla and Kalamata. All of these are grown at Allèe Bleue.
Bistro Allèe Bleue is situated in the heart of South Africa's gourmet capital: the winelands town of Franschhoek in the Western Cape. Here, the competition is serious – some of the country's finest chefs are located in the region, and they set the bar extremely high when it comes to cuisine.
This gorgeous courtyard bistro, situated on the Allèe Bleue wine estate, does the region proud. It's an unpretentious spot, framed in the distance by the gorgeous mountains and lush surroundings for which this valley is so well known.
The menu at Bistro Allèe Bleue takes advantage of the finest fresh produce, and has reinvented classic bistro items with South African flair and a touch of the contemporary. For starters, diners can enjoy dishes such as a duo of terrines (served with lemon and pepper pearls) or the goat's cheese wrapped in Parma ham. The crepinette of quail with wild mushrooms and a marinated plum tomato terrine, sets the tone for what is to come.
For mains, one could try the pan-fried kingklip with scallop risotto, or saffron beurre blanc and asparagus – or how about the ostrich fillet complete with pinotage jus, carrot mousse and potato galette? To end it all off, there is a chocolate gateaux on offer, or for something truly South African, why not try the Amarula tiramisu? While the menu changes all the time to match what is in season, this will give you some indication of the culinary journey on which you can embark at this winelands bistro.
Allèe Bleue wine estate also caters for those who wish to enjoy a picnic in the gorgeous grounds. A designer picnic hamper can be ordered beforehand, and you can sit under an ancient oak tree, sipping on chilled wines from the farm and feasting on delicious local fare. There's also a children's menu and this venue is kid-friendly, with a jungle gym, trampoline and jumping castle.
Another drawcard is the wine-tasting courtyard, where guests can relax and enjoy delicious tapas, married to the exquisite wines produced on the estate. Live music performances take place in the courtyard on Sundays.
