Wakkerstroom, Mpumalanga – not only for the birds

Birders from all over the world flock to the charming village of Wakkerstroom on the border of Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal. Why? Because this grassland biome is not only ranked with the Russian steppes, the North American prairies and the South American pampas, and has more critically endangered species than anywhere else in South Africa, but also because Wakkerstroom is home to a critical wetlands area, an important avian ‘flyway’ that thousands of birds use as migratory routes.
