​South African Tourism appoints Tom Bouwer as Chief Financial Officer

South African Tourism is pleased to announce the appointment of Tom Bouwer as its new Chief Financial Officer (CFO).

South African Tourism is pleased to announce the appointment of Tom Bouwer as its new Chief Financial Officer (CFO).

After 38 years of experience in public financial management spanning across a number of national government departments, Bouwer joins South African Tourism from the South African National Biodiversity Institute where he was the Chief Financial Officer. Prior to this he worked at the Department of Water Affairs, and was an Associate Director with SAHA International. Between 2000 and 2006, he was Chief Financial Officer at the National Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (now known as National Department of Tourism) and before that he was Director, Financial Services at the National Department of Housing.

In his role as South African Tourism’s CFO, his key focus includes delivering effective and efficient financial management in the key markets that South African Tourism operates in.  

During Bouwer’s tenure as CFO at the National Department of Tourismhe received the Southern African Institute of Government Auditors (SAIGA) Award for Best National Department – Financial Statements, as well as the SAIGA Award for the Most Consistent Financial Statements of the past five years.

Bouwer has a Masters degree in Business Leadership from UNISA and a Bachelor of Military Science (Commerce) from the University of Stellenbosch.  He takes over the position from outgoing CFO Johan van der Walt, who leaves the organisation after 12 years. 

“Johan has overseen and ensured the delivery of world-class internal controls, policies and procedures at South African Tourism, all of which are Public Finance and Management Act (PFMA) compliant. He can leave South African Tourism very proud of what he has achieved,” says Nzima.

“I join South African Tourism at an exciting time as the organisation expands its footprint, opening offices in new markets, especially gearing  up to operate effectively in emerging markets. I am a firm believer that I will succeed optimally in this role with the help of the great team at South African Tourism. I live by the slogan: to empower people is a risk, but to not empower people is a bigger risk,” says Bouwer.
