MOBILE TOURISM. Getting it right

Mobile Marketing is the buzzword in the marketing industry nowadays. We all know we have to get in there. But how does a small tourism business like a B&B, join the mobile marketing drive?

There are avenues like local apps and local websites, but the question is how do travellers find exactly what they want on a single, organised and logical platform, while on the go? The problem with existing platforms is mainly that they are local ONLY and that only paying customers get published. Searching the internet on mobile while on the go can be a tedious process, with thousands of results popping up.

The folks at appMyVILLAGE have come up with an answer. They have been developing a mobile platform that is user-friendly, relevant and offers timely information. An all-in-one solution.Their product has been endorsed by Minister Derek Hanekom (Tourism, National Government), Minister Alan Winde (Tourism, Western Cape) as well as SA Tourism (Brand South Africa)

How does appMyVILLAGE work?

All businesses that are listed at, or are members of local Tourism Bureaux and/or SAT are featured on appMyVILLAGE in an easy to use and logical platform.

It is not an appstore product, which means you don’t get those annoying “update available” messages. The app is a web-based application, which ensures the user gets updated information at all times. Every village's app is linked directly to a central platform, from where all others are easily accessible. So let's say someone gets the Beaufort West app, she can explore Beaufort West as well as any destination ahead, searchable by Region, by Route or alphabetical. Categorised.

Since it is not available on the app stores, distribution is a bit of a challenge. What they are doing, is to supply posters to all establishments that are listed. These are A4 digital posters are printed and displayed in the establishments as well as at the local Tourism Bureaux. When travellers scan the QR code, they have instant access to all listed towns. There is also a “share” button on the app, which allows you to share it with everyone you know.

Currently there are just over 6000 establishments listed and the team is busy working towards getting the whole country covered on appMyVILLAGE.  With 69 done, already covering more than 90% of the Western Cape and  7 towns in KwaZulu-Natal this husband and wife team, Hermann Joubert & Sandra Joubert, has come a long way. New towns and villages are being added constantly, while existing ones are being updated daily.
