Zurich: New7Wonders has confirmed that Table Mountain is officially one of the New7Wonders of Nature.

South Africa’s beloved mountain gained ‘provisional’ status after international voting closed in November last year. After an extensive international audit Table Mountain has been officially included on the New7Wonders list of outstanding natural attractions.

Sabine Lehmann, chairperson of the Table Mountain official supporters committee (OSC) said that the announcement would do a lot for the tourism industry. ‘Visitor numbers to Table Mountain reached record numbers after the mountain was named on the provisional list of 7 sites on 11 November 2011. We expect the official confirmation to further boost visitor interest locally and abroad.’

Patricia de Lille, Cape Town’s mayor, was also thrilled at the outcome. ‘The New7Wonders title has great long-term marketing value for Cape Town and South Africa. The wonder becomes part of school curricula, it becomes a “must see” and a “bucket list” item for travellers and explorers,’ she said.

The intensive New7Wonders campaign ran for over 3 years. Votes were counted from over 220 countries around the world. Bernard Weber, founder-president of New7Wonders, said it was of great significance that Table Mountain was chosen by voters globally to be the representative of Africa’s unique natural heritage.

An impressive commemorative plaque will be officially presented by New7Wonders to Table Mountain in October 2012. The Table Mountain OSC will plan the official inauguration ceremony. Watch this space!
