In the spirit of Mandela
We’ve worked closely with the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory to create an interactive online experience with powerful search and browsing tools, so that users can explore Mr Mandela’s inspiring life history. - Steve Crossan, director of the Google Cultural Institute.
On March 27, 2012, the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory launched the Nelson Mandela Digital Archive project on the world wide web - making thousands of historical documents and materials accessible to the public.
This groundbreaking move is a creative collaboration between the Google Cultural Institute and the Centre of Memory. There are now over 1900 images, videos and documents available to internet users around the world, with more to come over time.
The extensive archive gives insight into the life and times of Nelson Mandela and now correspondence with friends, family and comrades, and his diaries written during his 27 years of imprisonment are available to all.
Steve Crossan, director of the Google Cultural Institute, praised the fact that the internet can so successfully preserve historical heritage through modern and digital means. ‘We’ve worked closely with the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory to create an interactive online experience with powerful search and browsing tools, so that users can explore Mr Mandela’s inspiring life history,’ said Crossan.
Verne Harris from the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory points out that the archive is available to every individual who would like to explore South Africa’s history through the words and images of this great man.
South African-based multimedia and web specialists, Flow Communications, were involved in the technical aspects of the project in conjunction with the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory. The company was also responsible for designing and developing the new Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory site, launched earlier this month.
Managing Director Tiffany Turkington says. ‘Flow has been honoured to work with the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory on its online platforms and web presence. We are very excited to have been involved with the revamping of the current nelsonmandela.org site and to have been able to work with the great minds from Google on the archives.nelsonmandela.org initiative.’
The Centre of Memory and the individual contributors to the project own the material in the archive.
