At this year's FNB Joburg Art Fair, 2 Johannesburg artists' studios - the Bag Factory Artists' Studios and the Artist Proof Studio - will commemorate their 20th anniversaries by producing a joint catalogue of artwork entitled '20 Fine Years'. The portfolio will feature a selection of prints from fine artists who have been involved with their projects over a period of 20 years.

Modern art is part of the urban landscape of Gauteng. This project, supported by the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation, looks at the development of these studios, the artists who have participated in their programmes, and the development of visual arts in South Africa.

Twenty artists from these 2 community-based studios will participate in the project. Each will create a print for the portfolio. Both studios play a vital role in fostering the visual arts and helping historically disadvantaged South African artists to build successful careers.

Founded by David Koloane and Robert Loder in 1991, the Bag Factory provided studio space and resources at a time when black artists had very little access to professional art networks.

Sara Hallatt, director of the Bag Factory Artists Studios, says: 'This project is an important collaboration between the Bag Factory Artists' Studios and Artist Proof Studio, reinforcing our ethos of creative exchange and innovation. The portfolio celebrates our place in the visual arts community and the relationships that we have established over our 20 years. We are very excited to have the opportunity to bring this portfolio to the public at the Art Fair.'

Today, this artists' collective in Fordsburg promotes dialogue, the exchange of ideas, and innovation within the contemporary visual arts through a network of artists and arts organisations.

The Artist Proof Studio, founded by Kim Berman and Nhlanhla Xaba, provides talented but financially disadvantaged artists with access to a world-class studio and printmaking environment.

Among the artists represented in the portfolio are David Koloane, Patrick Mautloa, Helen Sebidi, Richard Penn, Charles Nkosi, Kim Berman, Nelson Makamo and Paul Molete.

The portfolio can be viewed and ordered at the FNB Joburg Art Fair, which takes place from 23 - 25 September 2011 at the Sandton Convention Centre. The FNB Joburg Art Fair is the only art fair on the African continent, and in the world, to focus on African contemporary art.
