First Fair Trade hotel room in Africa
This is yet another example of how South Africa is pioneering the development of Fair Trade in tourism through innovative thinking and close collaboration with stakeholders across industries and traditional boundaries. - Jennifer Seif, Executive Director of Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa (FTTSA)
The first Fair Trade hotel room in Africa will be launched at the Peech Hotel in Johannesburg later this month.
This exciting venture is a milestone for responsible tourism on the continent thanks to the key players: Fairtrade Label South Africa (FLSA); Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa (FTTSA); and the Peech Hotel.
The Fair Trade hotel room is based completely on the principles and aspirations of the local fair trade movement, and is designed to showcase how Fair Trade products can be used in the local hospitality environment in creative ways to the benefit of the traveller, the environment and the community at large.
'The Fair Trade hotel room embodies the vision of a sustainable and socially responsible hospitality industry in South Africa,' says Boudewijn Goossens, executive director of Fairtrade Label South Africa.
From the linen on the bed and the chocolates on the pillow to the tea and coffee, all of the commodities in the room will be Fair Trade certified.
The Peech Hotel, in Melrose, one of Johannesburg's upmarket suburbs, continues to be recognised for its commitment to responsible tourism. The hotel has been certified by FTTSA, which means that the establishment is committed to fair working conditions, best environmental practices and fair operations when it comes to ethical business practice.
'This is yet another example of how South Africa is pioneering the development of Fair Trade in tourism through innovative thinking and close collaboration with stakeholders across industries and traditional boundaries,' says Jennifer Seif, Executive Director of FTTSA.
FTTSA has extended an invitation to all fair trade supporters, media and consumers to view the first ever Fair Trade hotel room in South Africa. The room will be launched on 29 March and will also be open for viewing on 30 and 31 March by appointment.
