Cape Town is home to the world’s trendiest hotels

TripAdvisor users agree: Cape Town’s hotels offer the best of cutting-edge style against a magnificent backdrop that is the Mother City.

We put our heart and soul into the place, so it’s very rewarding to get this kind of recognition. I think that the internet has given travellers the space to make choices on their own and to become liberated and independent - and our property reflects this very individual attitude. - Kevin Gerlach, owner, Villa Zest Boutique Hotel

In this year’s TripAdvisor Travelers' Choice Awards Villa Zest Boutique Hotel in Green Point was voted as number 1 on the Top 25 Trendiest Hotels in the World list. The Protea Hotel Fire and Ice! Cape Town also secured a spot at number 11, beating top chi-chi destinations in Europe, Asia and the Americas.

Owner of the Bauhaus-themed Villa Zest Boutique Hotel, Kevin Gerlach, says that his phone has been ringing off the hook since the announcement. 'We put our heart and soul into the place, so it’s very rewarding to get this kind of recognition. I think that the internet has given travellers the space to make choices on their own and to become liberated and independent - and our property reflects this very individual attitude.'

Arthur Gillis, chief executive of the Protea Hotel Group, says he was particularly proud that Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! Cape Town ranks so high in the world (and in Africa) with TripAdvisor's users. He says, ‘Cape Town has firmly established its place as 1 of the top global destinations because of its staggering beauty, friendliness, favourable exchange rate and service culture.'

Two other Cape Town properties scored high with TripAdvisor internet users - Derwent House Boutique Hotel in Tamboerskloof took 5th place on the Top 25 Best Hotels in the World list, and Blackheath Lodge in Sea Point took the honours in 11th place. Both properties were also singled out by readers for their superb service.

Carol Judge, co-owner of Derwent House, was extremely pleased on hearing the good news. ‘It is just brilliant. We are really thrilled at the response of our guests and people who have stayed with us. We run a hotel in 1 of the most beautiful cities in the world and our hard work and commitment to great service is paying off.'

Cape Town has been voted as the World Design Capital 2014, and niche boutique hotel accommodation is certainly 1 of the highlights of this great city.
