South Africa scores with TripAdvisor travellers (again)
We are delighted that TripAdvisor travellers love South Africa so much and that they have once again chosen us as a choice destination. – William Price, global manager of e-marketing at South African Tourism
TripAdvisor – the world's largest interactive travel website – recently released its 2013 TripAdvisor Travelers' Choice awards list for best destinations around the world. South African destinations and cities fared extremely well, as they have done in previous years.
The awards are in their fifth year and recognise 412 incredible destinations in 38 markets across the globe. These awards are notable for the fact that winners are chosen by travellers themselves.
This year, Cape Town placed 16th on the Best Destinations in the World list, with Paris, New York and London taking the top three spots. Cape Town was in good company on the prestigious list – just below Tokyo and one place above Rio de Janeiro. With its gorgeous beaches, fantastic heritage attractions, and wonderful restaurants and winelands, the Mother City is most certainly worthy of its place.
In the 2012 awards, Cape Town was named in 22nd place, while in 2011 it took the top spot on the list of Top 25 Travelers' Choice World Destinations.
William Price, global manager of e-marketing at South African Tourism, says that accolades from TripAdvisor members are notable as the decision rests with the traveller. 'We are delighted that TripAdvisor travellers love South Africa so much and that they have once again chosen us as a choice destination.'
Cape Town took first place on the TripAdvisor Travelers' Choice 2013 Best Destinations in Africa list. It was joined on this list by numerous South African destinations and attractions: the Kruger National Park, one of the continent’s most famous game parks, placed ninth; Johannesburg was named in 10th place; and the pretty Garden Route town of Knysna, which is popular for its laid-back atmosphere, superb waterfront and gorgeous scenery, was voted 12th.
The winelands towns of the Western Cape also fared very well, with foodie favourite Franschhoek named in 14th place, Paarl in 15th place and Stellenbosch in 17th place. All of these destinations offer choice accommodation and are renowned for fabulous food and gorgeous wines.
The cities of Durban and Pretoria were named in 19th place and 23rd place respectively on the Best Destinations in Africa list. Durban is known for sunny climes and beautiful beaches, while Pretoria is the administrative capital of South Africa, with a range of heritage sites as well as bustling entertainment areas and good restaurants.
Says Price: 'The TripAdvisor accolade is one of the most prized in destination marketing and we are so proud to be the recipient one more time.'
